French scientists discover bubbles enhance flavour of Champagne

A study released today (September 30) proves there is more to the ceremonial pop when a bottle of Champagne is uncorked.

Bubbles carry aromas up to the surface and leave them hovering above the sparkling liquid in a fine mist.

As a result, when you lower your head to take a sip, your nose is met by a bouquet of buttery and fruity fragrances that defines the drink.Read more

English winegrowers to receive £1.6m education fund

UK and EU governments to provide invest to improve winegrowing skills

An estimated three million bottles of English wine are likely to be produced this year but the number of British workers with the necessary nose, palate and grape-growing skills, has not kept pace with the increasing acreage devoted to the industry.

In an attempt to encourage home-grown experts, the government and the European Commission have provided £1.6 million to set up classes in winemaking.

With climate change likely to increase the acreage of southern England that is suitable for wine production, ministers said that they were keen to ensure a skilled workforce was available.Read more

Greenbee Specialist Travel, part of the John Lewis Partnership, is offering wine tours with a twist. From September 2009, it will be offering a collection of expert-led wine tours and gourmet breaks, which have been developed in association with sister company Waitrose.

Six wine buyers and wine educators will take small groups on an adventure around some of the most beautiful countryside in France, Italy and Spain. The groups will have the chance to explore rolling vineyards, visit atmospheric cellars and meet the wine makers.

The cellars will be a mix of famous names and small wine producers. “It’s a chance for people to learn about wines from the “supermarket shelves to the vineyards,” said Dave Thornton, Waitrose Wine Direct product manager, responsible for the Loire tour. click here to find out moreRead more

Parents who give their child the occasional glass of wine with their meal could be turning them into binge drinkers, scientists have warned.

Growing numbers of middle class parents are following the example of French families and allowing their offspring to drink wine with their meals, in the belief it will teach them to drink responsibly, The Daily Mail has reported.
