Wine experts use social media to raise money for earthquake victims

Wine experts, including Jancis Robinson MW, Matthew Jukes and Gary Vaynerchuk, have been active in using social media to promote the Wines for Haiti fund-raising project, started by US wine network, Palate Press.

The campaign has drawn in support from social networking sites across the globe to encourage people to donate something special from their cellar to be auctioned online.

The Wines for Haiti auction has raised over $30,000 to date.Read more

Consumer wine site aims to create a ‘personalised consumer journey’

Independent wine merchant Laithwaites has launched a new look website in bid to give its customers a personalised journey.

The new-look laithwaites.co.uk was launched as part of a 3-phase development, will include the release of an i-Phone app later this year.

The new platform has been designed by ATG (Art Technology Group) to manage sales across several retail channels, including orders placed via the website, shops and phone.

Robert McCarthy, commercial director at Laithwaites Wine said that the new website “will focus on creating a personalised customer journey.”Read more

Recession, what recession? Asian fine wine buyers spend just under HK$53m (£4.21m)) in a single day at a record-breaking Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong.

The sale at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel last Saturday sold all 840 lots, comfortably beating pre-sale estimates of HK$40m (US$5.1m) and breaking Sotheby's record for a single day auction.Read more

A new wave of wines made from 100% domestically raised grapes is causing raised eyebrows among people who know their chablis from their cabernet sauvignon.

Shomei Yokouchi, the governor of Japan's prime wine growing region and other represenatives from the wine region took part in a promotional event in the UK this month.

Yocouchi introduced 15 Koshu white wines, made from the local Koshubudo grape, at a reception at the Japanese embassy.Read more

Aussies choose Jacob’s Creek as best ‘sparkling Moscato’

Wine named as the 2010 “Australia Day” Wine of the Year
   
Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Moscato has won the National Australia Day Council’s trophy for “Best Australian Sparkling Wine – Aperitif Style” at the 2010 Sydney International Wine Competition.

Moscato is the Italian name for wines made from the Muscat grape in a style from the northern region of Piedmont, Italy.

Sydney International Wine Competition (SIWC) director Warren Mason said the Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Moscato is a crowd pleaser, great for celebrating big moments or enjoying quiet ones and makes a great wine ambassador for Australia Day on January 26.

The Moscato was the competition judges’ highest pointed Australian sparkling wine from amongst 74 wines. Read more
